History
Founded in 1997 as The Colony High School hockey team, the Cougars joined the Dallas Stars High School Hockey League for its second season, competing alongside 20 other high school programs from across the metroplex. As the roster grew beyond a single high school, the club rebranded as the Denton County Spartans Hockey Club, competing under the Spartans name by the 2011–12 season, a name that better represented the players wearing the sweater. Today the Spartans draw from across Denton County fielding Varsity and Junior Varsity teams in the Texas Scholastic Hockey League.
